Brothers,

Most of you have received a letter from Seamus Boyle. This letter is stating a “case” against National President Jack Meehan. Jack wants you all to know that there are two sides to every story and enclosed is Jack’s reply. Here is an interesting point that I should bring out. BEFORE Jack was elected our National President Seamus Boyle approached Jack and asked him if he “planned on running for a 2nd term”. Jack at the time thought it was a rather odd question to ask. Now, as things unfold it is obvious that there was a planned background to this venture by Seamus Boyle. The incident that kicked off Seamus’ campaign was the Smithsonian incident. What happened was the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, DC, had a folk festival over this past 4th of July. They “invited” the Orange Order to participate for their “contributions” to their community, etc. Along with them came Martin McGuiness. Jack contacted Martin and told him that we did not approve of him being shoulder to shoulder with the Orange Order under these conditions. NOW Past President, Ned McGinley took deep offense to this objection and questioning of Mr. McGuiness. As Ned McGinley supports Sinn Fein 110%. I , and many others, contacted the Smithsonian and told them and I quote ,”inviting the Orange Order here for their contributions to their community is like inviting the Klu Klux Klan to an NAACP convention for their contributions to the Black Community”. I also stated that is an insult to every Irish American Catholic and even worse to the Catholics of Northern Ireland. That is basically the background to this current situation. Now WE NEED YOUR HELP. Please SUPPORT Jack and try to get as many as possible to the National Convention in New Orleans next July 2008.

Yours in Motto,

Dick Mac Donald

  1. Quoted from Seamus Boyle Says:

The following are some examples of problems that have caused us to act.

    1. Departing from past practice no National Board meeting was held immediately following the 2006
    Boston Convention
    2. In the first few months of our term two meetings were held in New York by the four elected officers
where discussions were held and decisions made but many of those decisions agreed upon by all present
were never carried out by the President.
    3. In November of 2006, no National Board meeting was scheduled. OEcers persuaded President
Meehan to have our first National Board meeting, of his tenure, by conference call.
    4. Numerous National Board officers were together in New Orleans, (site inspection)and Florida, (Past
National President Cilligan’s funeral) No meetings were held, although requested.
    5. Brother Meehan does not communicate nor consult with the rest of his board on major decisions.
    6. Decisions made by National President resulted in unauthorized expenditures for outside legal counsel.
    7. Communication and interaction between many of the elected officers and National President is poor
    8. There have been several misleading pieces of information on articles in the “Presidents Message” in
    the Hibernian Digest.
    9. We believe there has been a misuse of the Presidents Column in the Hibernian Digest as a political
    forum for one candidate.
If anyone needs further information on any of the above items please do not hesitate to contact me as I
have tried to consolidate these issues but I do have all the additional information and details.

Thank you for taking the time to read this information.

  2. Jack Meehan Says:

    Brothers,
As stated by Brother Dick MacDonald, the incident involving the Smithsonian Institution’s Folk Festival on the National Mall in Washington, DC was one reason for the proposed challenge to my re-election @ our National Convention in New Orleans. I believe the other is my insistence that our National Secretary start to employ some basic computer practices such as electronic transfer of membership information rather than continuing to transact all of his business through the USPS. This was in response to dozens and dozens of calls and e-mails from our members, mostly Financial Secretarys, all across the U.S. The overwhelming majority of our members believe that the time has come for our National Secretary’s office to move out of the “horse and buggy days” and into the 21st Century. I agree, wholeheartedly, and will continue to work towards that end. My response to the National Vice President’s letter answers all of his innuendoes and half truths with facts.
    Jack Meehan, National President
Ancient Order of Hibernians in America
